Librarian for the Purdue University Black Cultural Center

The Purdue Black Cultural Center invites applicants for Purdue University Black Cultural Center Librarian.  The successful applicant will provide leadership in providing reference services, instruction, collection development and outreach activities.  The position will be .75 FTE at Black Cultural Center (BCC) and .25 FTE at Purdue University Libraries.  The position supports the direct collaboration between the BCC and Purdue Libraries on technical services, workflow, exhibits and other programmatic initiatives.

Purdue Black Cultural Center
The Purdue Black Cultural Center (BCC) is a nationally acclaimed organization and treasured educational resource.  It is a focal point for the African American experience and a force for cultural enrichment and intellectual growth at Purdue University and in the community.  The Black Cultural Center is a place where the black experience in America can be explored, celebrated and shared.  The center provides an environment that fosters cross-cultural exchanges and noteworthy research as well as artistic expression through music, dance, drama and creative writing.

Library
The BCC library contains materials relevant to the historical, sociological, political and cultural aspects of the Black experience.  The library houses more than 7,000 volumes and subscribes to over 40 periodicals including scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers.  Electronic resources are also available.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
  • Bachelor’s degree in African American Studies or equivalent combination of course work and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Experience in an academic or research library preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in web page development.

Responsibilities

  • Research, select and order library materials including monographs and periodicals, media, electronic resources and vertical file materials.
  • Develop and maintain BCC website and social media.
  • Instruct faculty, students, staff and community users in the effective use of the library resources through formal workshops, curriculum-based instruction and individualized instruction.
  • Supervise student assistants including hiring, training, developing and evaluating in circulation and shelving activities.
  • Promote the library services through such activities as tours, developing on-site and off-site displays and outreach programs.
  • Compile bibliographies and writing copy for brochures and press releases.
  • Coordinate the preservation of materials including monographs and periodical binding and repair.
  • Ensure BCC library holdings are accurately reflected in Purdue University Libraries online catalogue and remote bibliographic databases.  Maintain security of materials and equipment in the library.
  • Work in collaboration with Libraries’ faculty and staff on information literacy efforts and orientation activities, with focus on first year experience programming.
