Norfolk State University Receives National Ranking

Washington Monthly magazine has named Norfolk State University among its top colleges and universities in its 2012 College Rankings. NSU ranked 227 out of nearly 700 schools in the master's universities category.

Washington Monthly bases its annual rankings on the contribution of universities to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.'s) and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). It began its rankings about eight years ago in response to other national rankings that focused on what universities did for individual students.

"Norfolk State has a legacy of educating first-time college students, giving them the tools to pursue terminal degrees and imbuing them with the value of giving back to their communities and their country," said President Tony Atwater. "This ranking also demonstrates that NSU is on the true and correct path to transforming lives."

Only 16 Virginia universities were ranked in the master's universities category. Overall, the magazine ranked 1,569 public, private nonprofit and for-profit colleges and universities.
