HU Professor Receives 2012 Outstanding Faculty Award
Hampton, Va. - The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia has named Dr. Zina McGee, Hampton University endowed professor of sociology, a 2012 Outstanding Faculty Award recipient. The award is the highest recognition for professors from the Commonwealth.
"The Hampton University community joins me in congratulating Dr. McGee on her selection as a recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Faculty Award," said HU President Dr. William R. Harvey. "Dr. McGee has shown a steadfast commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service."
McGee is among 12 recipients from Virginia's public and private colleges and universities who will be honored on Feb. 16, at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
McGee has taught at HU for almost 19 years. During her tenure she has received multiple grants to pursue her research interest, including a faculty research fellowship with the National Consortium on Violence Research through Carnegie Mellon University.
"Dr. McGee's dedication to her research and her rapport with students makes her greatly deserving of this honor," said HU Provost Dr. Pamela V. Hammond. "She is truly a role model for her peers and another shining example of the enormous talent that exists among our faculty."
McGee specializes in juvenile delinquency and victimization among minority youth. Her research involves investigating the patterns of coping among youth in high stress areas. According to McGee, many studies emphasize the effects of television violence on youth compared to real-life violent events.
Another major area of research for McGee is the patterns of coping among women in prison. Her research examines how women cope after being exposed to violence as children and the impact it has on them and their children as they commit crimes as adults. Her research is highlighting the cyclical and generational impact crime has on women and their children.
McGee received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in sociology from the University of New Orleans and earned her doctorate in sociology from Tulane University.
This year marks the 26th anniversary of the statewide awards program, which honors faculty members for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration, and public service. The 12 recipients were selected from a pool of 125 applications based on accomplishments that strongly reflect the missions of their respective institutions. Each recipient will receive an engraved award and a $5,000 check underwritten by the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources.
