EWC Concert Choir Helps Honor Nelson Mandela's Life
He was one of the world's most influential leaders, and a dozen members of the Edward Waters College Concert Choir honored Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela's memory with the gift of song. The performance was part of the City of Jacksonville's and the Jacksonville Sister Cities Association's fundraiser for Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa.
The student singers were part of a group of combined choruses that included members from the Florida State College of Jacksonville Gospel Choir, Jacksonville Children's Choir, the Ritz Voices and the University of North Florida Chorale. During the ceremony, the combined choir sang the National Anthem of South Africa where EWC senior, Theresa Atkins had a solo.
The money raised from the banquet will be used to buy medical supplies for Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa, one of Jacksonville's eight sister cities around the world. Organizers hope to raise between $7,000 and $10,000 for the cause.
Benson Fihla, mayor of the South African city, was the keynote speaker which celebrated Mandela's life.
Jacksonville has been a sister city with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality since 2000, and the First Coast has helped with similar programs in the past. Edward Waters College President Nathaniel Glover is an Honorary Chair of the Jacksonville Sister Cities. The College purchased a table at the banquet where Mr and Miss EWC and several members of the Student Government Association sat.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality delegation, representatives of the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C., and local dignitaries and elected officials were in attendance. Three Duval County Public School students were also featured for winning a poetry contest for the banquet.
