Hampton University News January 22, 2019 Hampton University Alumna Ruth Carter Nominated for Best Costume Design Academy Award for her work in Marvel's 'Black Panther'01/22/2019 - #153 Ruth E. Carter, Hampton University alumna, has been nominated for the Best Costume Design Academy Award for her work in the wold-wide blockbuster film, Marvel’s “Black Panther.” Carter is the first African American costume designer to be nominated for an Academy Award, and now the first African American costume designer to be nominated for an Academy Award for the third time. “We at Hampton University congratulate Ruth E. Carter for her historic Academy Award nomination,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “We are overjoyed to watch this amazing and talented Hampton University alum gain so much success in her career. What a great moment for Hampton University, to see one of our very own achieve such an accomplishment. It was wonderful to welcome Ruth home as our 2018 commencement speaker. Ms. Carter is a true role model to our students. We wish her the best of luck.” Carter, a 1982 graduate of Hampton University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts, majored in Theatre Arts and has worked in the entertainment industry for over three decades. Carter’s unparalleled ability to develop an authentic story through costume and character has made her one of the most sought after and renowned costume designers today. Carter also served as the keynote speaker at Hampton University’s 148th Commencement Ceremony in 2018. “It feels like a great honor to be a costume designer representing a genre in the film industry that people inspire to be like. It’s the art of collaboration, where we embrace the costumes, bring in the story, and add in the African elements to it. I’ve always wanted to recreate culture and history that was authentic that people could enjoy in a really beautiful way,” said Carter, regarding her work on the 2018 film, “Black Panther.” Carter has garnered two Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design for Spike Lee’s “Malcom X” in 1993 and Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” in 1998. The “Black Panther” nod is her third Academy Award nomination. She also received an Emmy nomination for her work on the 2016 reboot, “Roots.” Over Carter’s three decades in entertainment, she has worked with some of the top directors in Hollywood including Spike Lee, Lee Daniels, Reggie Hudlin, Steven Spielberg and now Ryan Cooglar. “Black Panther” received a total of seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and grossed a worldwide total of $1.347 billion. Ms. Carter will also be honored with the Career Achievement Award at the 21st Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGA) on February 19, 2019 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
