Hampton University News March 10, 2020 Hampton University Student Counseling Center to Host Inaugural HBCU Mental Health Tour, March 31 The Hampton University Student Counseling Center is partnering with Student Support Services and Amerikan Therapy Podcast to bring the HBCU Mental Health Tour to campus. This inaugural event will be held on March 31 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Hampton University Student Center Ballroom. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for light refreshments and giveaways. This event is free and open to the public. "Hampton University welcomes students, faculty, staff, administrators and the entire community to this inaugural HBCU Mental Health Tour. This will be a great opportunity to encourage healthy conversation and positive thinking about mental health within the Black community," said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. The theme for this inaugural event is "Explore the Mind," which will guide attendees on a journey consisting of various mental health topics including resilience, self-care and decreasing the stigma of seeking mental health care in the Black community. The aim is to continue conversation about mental wellness in a way that is destigmatizing and encouraging. This program will also be an opportunity to discuss how mental health impacts first generation and low-income students as well. The program will feature guest speaker, Mr. Fletcher Cleaves, a Memphis native whose story is full of resilience, hope and inspiration. He has appeared on ESPN TV, ESPN radio, SportsCenter and more, speaking about his journey from playing football on a scholarship to being involved in a tragic car accident, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. There will also be a panel discussion, self-care giveaways and the first 100 attendees will receive a free gift card! "The HBCU Mental Health Tour is a partnership between the Student Counseling Center, Student Support Services, and Amerikan Therapy podcast.
