Nationally Recognized Hampton University Child Development Center Win 2018 Best of Hampton Award

The Hampton University Child Development Center (HUCDC) has been selected for the 2018 Best of Hampton Award in the Child Care category by the Hampton Award Program.

"I would like to commend Joy Phelps and her staff at the Hampton University Child Development Center on their tremendous work and receiving this award," said Dr. William R. Harvey, Hampton University President. "This latest recognition is further proof that even in early childhood education, Hampton University is THE Standard of Excellence."

Phelps, Director of the HUCDC, has worked hard to boost the center's image within the community since arriving in 2015. Phelps' background in helping children with learning disabilities has allowed her to expand the center's services, which now provides for children with autism and other learning disabilities.

The HUCDC won the Best of Hampton Award in the Child Care category in 2016 and 2017 as well. Each year, the Hampton Award Program identifies companies that have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category.

"Winning this award has been a privilege and honor," Phelps said. "Receiving this award three years in a row has demonstrated the high standards of academic excellence and high quality care and learning at the Hampton University Child Development Center. This award adds another major achievement for Hampton University during the year of celebrating the 150th of Hampton University and the 40th of President William R. Harvey's leadership."

Virginia's U.S. Senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, sent letters to Phelps last year congratulating her and her staff for their hard work, after they earned the national title of Child Care Provider of the Month last June. The HUCDC also won the Charles A. Wornom Helping Hands Award (2016) from the Hampton Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities for their dedication to helping children with unique learning abilities.
