HU's Harvey: Haysbert not hired to succeed me

By Samieh Shalash  and Jennifer L. Williams

After former Hampton University Provost JoAnn Haysbert announced that she is returning to HU this spring to serve as executive vice president, I asked President William R. Harvey if he intends to groom her to take over the presidency. He's held HU's top spot for 33 years.

"That is not part of the plan," Harvey said, "but she would clearly make an outstanding president."

Harvey pointed out that Haysbert is the fifth HU official who has left to serve as the president of a different college or university who has come back to work for him. She will be the number two officer at HU, he said, a position he has not filled for about six years.

Haysbert is currently at Langston University in Oklahoma, a historically black college that she has led for six years.

"We're not bringing her back to succeed me," Harvey stressed. "We're not bringing her back to do that."
