Walmart and Albany State University Announce Groundbreaking  Partnership

Executives from the world's largest retailer and private employer are heading to Albany State University to launch a new partnership that includes need-based scholarships for students.

Representatives from Walmart headquarters in Arkansas and several regional distribution centers will make a major announcement about their intent to team with ASU in the development of a more diverse and skilled workforce. The presentation will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, on the 2nd floor in the Student Center Atrium.

"Walmart is a major contributor to historically black colleges and universities. We want to send a message that Walmart is committed to helping Albany State students succeed by opening opportunities to career advancement through education," said Division of Human Resources Manager of Health and Wellness Logistics at Walmart, Charles E. Moore. "I have two children who graduated and one preparing to enter college now. I know how tough and heartbreaking it can be for students who desire to attend college, but can't afford it, particularly African American youth," Moore added.

The partnership includes not only scholarships, but in-kind contributions, potential internships and job readiness workshops facilitated by Walmart managers who are logisticians, attorneys and transportation managers. The seminars are aimed at helping students market their experience and skills.

The 2014- 2015 school year begins on Aug. 18. "The timing of the announcement coincides with the start of an exciting new school year. Walmart's contribution and groundbreaking partnership jumpstarts what will be a long term collaborative relationship," said ASU Interim president Dr. Art Dunning.

"I am pleased that Walmart has recognized the urgent needs of ASU students and will help fulfill their dream of a college education. Most of our students receive some form of financial aid to pay for tuition, fees and books," said ASU Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Dr. Chanta Haywood.

Student interested in applying for a Walmart scholarship must be a U.S. citizen, enrolled full time and earn at least a 2.8 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Albany State University, located in Albany, GA is a four-year institution in the University System of Georgia that fosters the growth and development of students in Southwest Georgia and the state through teaching, learning, research, creative expression and public service.
