Alcorn residence halls equipped with latest Wi-Fi access technology
The latest technological advancements in wireless communications has made it to the residence halls at Alcorn State University and will allow students to easily connect their various devices to the Internet.
Alcorn's Center for Information Technology Services, in partnership with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of the President, has installed new wireless access equipment throughout all campus residence halls. The new equipment, provided by Xirrus, is the latest in Wi-Fi connectivity technology.
The new wireless network provides Wi-Fi A, B, G, N, and AC technology to support high speed Wi-Fi to all currently deployed Wi-Fi clients including the iPhone X.
Desmond Stewart, interim chief information officer at Alcorn, said that the upgrades are an exceptional investment, and that students can now operate wirelessly without encountering connection issues.
"This new system allows us to have capability, visibility and manageability into wireless networks at Alcorn like never before," said Stewart. "With these new capabilities, we can ensure that students at the university have access to the Internet resources necessary for instruction, research and entertainment required at a comprehensive university like Alcorn. We can, at a moment's notice, evaluate traffic patterns, identify users abusing the wireless resources and restrict, as needed, bandwidth access to ensure equitable usage of network resources for all constituents."
In terms of security, every user must connect using their individual passcode to successfully connect to the wireless network. This level of security prevents persons not affiliated with the university from connecting to the wireless network without proper authorization. Additionally, the network provides a voucher-based system for campus guests to receive restricted network access as required.
Equipping the residence halls with updated wireless equipment is Phase 1 of a three phase university-wide technological project. Phases 2 and 3 will focus on equipping academic and administrative buildings and outdoor public access facilities with the new technology.
