Kaiser Family Foundation Announces 2011 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundationhttp://www.kff.org/, in partnership with Howard Universityhttp://www.howard.edu/, has selected fourteen college seniors and recent college graduates as 2011 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholarshttp://www.kff.org/minorityhealth/bjscholars/index.cfm.
Established in memory of the first African-American woman from a Southern state elected to Congress and a former member of the foundation's board, the Barbara Jordan Scholars Program provides college seniors and recent graduates who have a strong interest in addressing health issues that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities and other disadvantaged populations an opportunity to spend a summer working on health policy in Washington, D.C. While working on Capitol Hill, scholars will participate in seminars and site visits organized by the Foundation to broaden their knowledge of health care issues and also present a policy memo that provides an in-depth analysis of a health care issue.
Chosen from a pool of two hundred applicants, this year's scholars are Jennica Allen, Tufts University; Cara Buchanan, Columbia University; Ashley Crawford, Davidson College; Alyzza Dill, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Hannah Grow, Pennsylvania State University; Jelani Harvey, Columbia University; Gary Kersey, Morehouse College; Deon Peoples, University of Central Oklahoma; Yvonne Perez, Brandeis University; Jason Sherer, Hampton University; Christina Swoope, University of Georgia; Cheeduoa Thaoxaochay, Stanford University; Denise Vasquez, University of Texas, Austin; and Emanuel Zamora, Whittier College.
"These talented scholars will have the opportunity to critically examine a variety of health policy issues, at a time of great debate about health care," said Kaiser Family Foundation president and CEO Drew Altman. "This group of students honors the legacy of Barbara Jordan with its passion and commitment to excellence and to public service."
