Hampton University News December 7, 2015 HU students receive scholarships from Apple, Inc. Diversity Initiative Hampton, Va - Two Hampton University students were named among 30 HBCU students to receive scholarships from Apple in its $40 Million Diversity Effort. Lauren Patterson, junior computer science major from Philadelphia, PA and Malik Jones, junior journalism major from Alpharetta, GA, both received a one-year college scholarship and a summer internship program at Apple's Cupertino, California headquarters. They received their scholarships during the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Annual Leadership Institute in Washington D.C., on Nov. 16. These Hampton students will be representing the Department of Computer Science and the Scripps Howard School of Journalism well. "It is truly an honor to have one of our students to be accepted into the prestigious Apple, Inc. sponsored Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Program," said Dr. Jean Muhammad Chair of Department of Computer Science. "This is a tremendous opportunity for Lauren. This program is more than just a scholarship, it will provide real professional opportunities over the summer which will allow Lauren to move forward into her future career in the field of computer science." "Being in this inaugural class is such an honor," said Patterson. "It's really important because it shows how Apple is taking the initiative to hire more HBCU students, which will make Apple even more diverse. When I interned with Apple last summer I was the only intern on my team and I worked on a project by myself and I didn't feel like it was impossible work and I got it done." Through this effort these students will be awarded up to $25,000 scholarship for their senior year of study; participate in a summer internship with Apple in Cupertino, California; participate in a year-round development program to prepare for post-graduation careers; be paired with an Apple employee mentor during their senior year; serve as ambassadors on their HBCU campuses to build awareness for the Apple and TMCF Diversity Initiative; and participate in the Apple HBCU Immersion experience in Cupertino, California during spring 2016. "We have so many outstanding students here at the Scripps Howard School, and Malik stands tall, right there among them," said Brett Pulley, Dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. "Apple is one of the world's greatest companies, and I am so happy that Apple's recruiters have recognized what a promising and talented young man Malik is." Out of approximately 1,200 students from 47 different HBCUs that applied for this scholarship opportunity two of the 30 recipients are from Hampton University. "This has been a very humbling experience," said Jones. "I can't wait to get insight into how Apple's public relations team works on the global market. Getting hands on experience with a company that is this large is a challenge that I'm eagerly awaiting. Lauren and I also hope to raise awareness for this program on campus, so next year more Hampton students will apply. The goal is to bridge the gap between HBCUs and big companies."
