FVSU to host Tubman Museum benefit
In Middle Georgia, the Tubman African-American Museum is an iconic landmark that highlights the social, historical and cultural contributions of Blacks within this nation. Its exhibitions are not only aesthetically-appealing, but also functionally educational, too. A small inventors' gallery profiles innovations created by African Americans. A lovely, multi-panel mural provides a pictorial overview of famous figures in Black history; while, other galleries feature artwork crafted by Georgia and national artists.
Next month, Fort Valley State University and the museum will join forces for an important benefit to raise funding for the museum's educational outreach programs and free memberships for university students. The "Sunday Afternoon at the Tubman Museum" benefit will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. All are invited to attend this unique fundraiser.
According to Nicole Abdou, marketing director for the Tubman Museum, FVSU's first lady, Betty Rivers, is spearheading the initiative.
"The Tubman Museum is proud to partner with FVSU," said Abdou. "Through the leadership of Mrs. Betty Rivers, the Tubman is happy to accept the funds raised from the event. We will be able to support even more educational workshops and fund more outreach teachers."
The event will feature a brief tribute to America's veterans. FVSU President Larry E. Rivers will serve as an auctioneer during a live auction where artwork, collectibles, gift baskets and other valuables will be given to the highest bidder. The FVSU Jazz Quintet will serenade guests, while others dine on the hors d'oeuvres catered by Sodexo.
"There are a lot of exciting programs at the Tubman," says Rivers, who explained that the university has a longstanding relationship with the museum. A retrospective, historical exhibit about FVSU was hosted at the Tubman in 2010.
"We're trying to assist with some of the museum's popular initiatives," said the first lady, who hopes to raise more than $3,000 during the benefit.
Admission to the event is $25. To purchase advance tickets, and for more information, contact the FVSU Foundation, Inc. at (478) 825-6474, or Tracy Marshall, director of education and outreach for the Tubman African American Museum, at (478) 743-8544, extension 14.
