Daniel Foundation of Alabama grants $200,000 for scholarships

Tuskegee University is the recipient of a grant of $200,000 from The Daniel Foundation of Alabama. The grant will establish the Alabama Endowed Scholarship Fund and will be matched by Tuskegee University over the next five years.

The fund is for Alabama students with demonstrated financial need. To qualify, eligible students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to students who have shown leadership and service in their communities.

According to the proposal: "By supporting the educational needs of students who are dedicated to improving their communities, the Alabama Endowed Scholarship Fund will ensure that youth are equipped with the skills and knowledge to become effective champions for Alabama for years to come."

With the endowment, approximately 3 to 4 students from Tuskegee will be recipients of the scholarship annually. Scholarships will range from $3,000 to $5,000, depending on financial need. Recipients will be eligible for renewal, provided they continue to meet eligibility criteria. Each new student selected for an award will be provided a mentor to help ensure a smooth transition to the university.

"We are pleased to be a part of the education and development of Alabama's next generation of engaged citizens and leaders by supporting the Alabama Endowed Scholarship Fund," said Maria Kennedy, the foundation's executive director.

Based in Birmingham, Ala., The Daniel Foundation of Alabama's mission is to strengthen the state's communities and improve the quality of life by supporting educational programs; arts and culture; civic and community programs; and medical care and research.
