Spelman College Looks to Export Its Wellness Revolution Nationwidehttp://www.jbhe.com/2013/11/spelman-college-looks-to-export-its-wellness-revolution-nationwide/
Last November, Spelman College in Atlanta announced that it would end all intercollegiate sports and focus instead on its new Wellness Revolution. Under the plan, Spelman dropped intercollegiate sports and now focuses instead on "fitness/wellness/intramural programs, emphasizing those activities that career women are likely to maintain for a lifetime - tennis, golf, swimming, yoga, Pilates, running and walking."
Now, Spelman College has entered into a partnership agreement with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to promote the health of Spelman students and others in the African American community. The agreement calls for projects on nutrition, fitness education, and physical activity.
The new agreement calls for Spelman and the NICHD to educate potential partners on the college's Wellness Revolution and to use the program as a model for college women on other campuses across the nation. A summit will be held on the Spelman campus in February on the benefits of Wellness Revolution. The NICHD will provide internships and other opportunities to Spelman students to conduct research on wellness programs and other scientific endeavors.
