Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well today.  Today I'm celebrating the 1887 founding of Mound Bayou, Mississippi. The city, proudly described by local residents as "Jewel of the Delta," is the oldest all-black municipality in the United States. Mound Bayou was founded by Isaiah Montgomery and his cousin, Benjamin Green. Montgomery and Green were both former slaves of Joseph Davis, brother of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Isaiah Montgomery was elected as the first mayor. He started a tradition of black government that persists to the present day.  Mound Bayou was founded to serve as a sanctuary for African-American families and culture. The Founders helped to make the dream of creating a successful, self-sufficient and cooperative community of freedmen a reality.

Director's Dialogue: Ten-at-Ten
As the Alliance moves strategically to promote collaboration of information professionals and strengthen the membership, I'd like to keep you informed of current and future activities.

Director's Dialogue: Ten-at-Ten will provide an opportunity for us to meet quarterly via webinar. Using the Adobe Connect software, I'll update you on the activities of the HBCU Library Alliance, answer your questions and respond to your chat items.

The first Ten-at-Ten is scheduled for Tuesday, August 30th, 10:00 - 10:10. To maximize this experience, forward to me as soon as possible any topics you would like addressed.  Since we are meeting via webinar, let me know by August 1st if you're attending so that log-in instructions are forwarded to you. A meeting reminder will be posted toward the end of August.

I'm excited about the progressive work of the HBCU Library Alliance and the opportunity to keep you informed!

Respectfully,

Sandra
