Fisk University News October 13, 2017 Fisk University Hacking Team Finishes Among The Top Three In Black Enterprise Hackathon With their first appearance in the 2017 Black Enterprise (BE) Smart Hackathon, the Fisk University Hacking Team finished as a runner up Tuesday, Oct. 10 in Burlingame, Calif. The Fisk Hackers team included: Amier Smith, senior computer science major from Nassau, Bahamas; Oumar Karaga, junior computer science and mathematics major from Ougadougou, South Africa; Rahmi Pruitt, senior computer science major from Memphis, Tenn.; and Lee Hong, senior computer science major from Nassau, Bahamas. The 2017 BE Smart Hackathon was a part of the BE TechConneXt Summit that presented a unique and unparalleled opportunity, bringing the best and brightest of the black tech community from Silicon Valley and beyond. Members of the tech community met with large scale companies and heard from keynote speakers on possible career paths and more. During the hackathon, Fisk Hackers had 24-hours to develop an app for Toyota to enrich the in-store experience and present their app to all attendees. "I've competed in many hackathons, but this was the first time I had to present in front of so many people," said team tech leader, Amier Smith. "However, presenting was my favorite part of the hackathon, once I got started I felt more comfortable on stage." The app the Fisk Hackers developed had many features; however, the most appealing feature was buyers could use the database to describe the car of their choice and a hologram of the vehicle would appear floating on their phone. The top three HBCUs were Fisk, Morehouse College, and the winner North Carolina A&T State University. Fisk Hackers are set to host a hackathon on the Fisk University campus in October. SANDRA M.
