ASU Again Receives Cancer Research Grant to Train High School Students

For the second consecutive year, Alabama State University has received a grant to train high school students in cancer research under the Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP). The grant was awarded by the Academy of Applied Sciences through the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP).

REAP is a summer program that places talented high school students from groups historically underrepresented and underserved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in research apprenticeships at colleges and universities.

The program is designed to engage, motivate and train students early in their careers so they can move to STEM programs after high school.

Dr. Manoj Mishra, associate professor of biology and Director of Cancer Biology Research and Training Program, will serve as ASU's REAP director. Mishra's laboratory at ASU conducts research on prostate cancer. His group investigates the role of diet and immune cells in cancer progression and clearance.

He said the grant will fund the cancer biology research and training's summer program for high school students.

"This award will boost the outreach activities on cancer research to our local area high school students," Mishra said. "high school students will get trained and exposed to cancer research. It also will help train the next generation of youth early in their career so they can be part of STEM workforce in future."

Recently, Mishra spearheaded the successful partnership between ASU and UAB's Comprehensive cancer center that got funded from National Cancer Institutes at NIH.

"The summer programs have been successfully used as a tool for student recruitment and retention," he said.

The deadline to apply is March 1, 2015. Applicants will be required to register online.http://www.usaeop.com/programs/apprenticeships/reap/
