Tuskegee University receives higher Carnegie Classification

Tuskegee University has advanced one step closer to being a Carnegie classified Master's Large institution by 2020. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education has moved Tuskegee from being classified as a baccalaureate college to a higher tier in their system. Based on enrollment and producing an increased number of master's degree students annually, Tuskegee was moved to the Master's Small classification. The institution plays no role in determining its Carnegie classification status, but it is determined by independent review.

The change not only places Tuskegee among a higher class of institutions, but is also a good sign of the significant progress the university is making toward the goals included in its strategic plan.

"Tuskegee University is delighted with this reclassification of its status as it will align the institution more closely to its peers and aspirant institutions. In fact, the institution seeks within its 5-year strategic plan to achieve Master's Large Carnegie classification status," said Tuskegee University president, Dr. Brian L. Johnson.

Dr. Tamara Floyd-Smith, interim assistant provost, said the Carnegie system dates back to the 1970s and is used to measure academic status. Every five years, the classifications are updated based on information from the Integrated Postsecondary Education System. Tuskegee moved forward because the institution now produces at least 50 master's degree graduates per year.

"The reclassification of Tuskegee recognizes the progress the university is making as a research institution. While that will undoubtedly affect the university's ranking among peers, it is an indication of Tuskegee's growth and greater service to higher education," Floyd-Smith said.
