Tuskegee University News February 2017 Brian L. Johnson To Receive Carver Medal on Feb. 22 Simpson College is pleased to announce that Brian L. Johnson, the seventh president of Tuskegee University, has been chosen to receive the 2017 Carver Medal. The medal honors the legacy of George Washington Carver, who began his academic career at Simpson. The Carver Medal and Lecture ceremony is one of the most important events on the College's academic calendar. This year's event will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 in Smith Chapel. The public is invited to attend. Johnson was appointed as president of historic Tuskegee University in 2014. Before that, he served the university in a number of capacities. He has held several administrative and academic fellowships, and he has been the editor and author of seven academic and scholarly books, including two on W.E.B. Du Bois. He also serves as a member of the board of trustees for The Trinity Forum and the United Negro College Fund Institutional Board of Directors. Carver was accepted to Simpson after first being rejected by another college because of his race. He eventually became one of the country's most esteemed artist, inventor, teacher and humanitarian. The Carver Lecture series dates back to 1975, while the Carver Medal was first awarded in 2008. Past speakers have included the Rev.
