Tuskegee University News December 2, 2010 Troy selected as director of Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education TUSKEGEE, Ala. (December 2, 2010) — Tuskegee University president, Dr. Gilbert L. Rochon, announced the appointment of Dr. Roberta M. Troy as the founding director of the Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education (HDIRE), effective Dec. 13. Troy most recently served as interim provost at Tuskegee and director of the SACS-required Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). She was previously assistant provost for undergraduate studies, subsequent to having served as head and associate professor of the Department of Biology at Tuskegee. She earned the B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology from Tuskegee University, and the Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Florida, where she was a McKnight Pre-doctoral Fellow. Subsequently, Troy continued her training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where she was a postdoctoral fellow in molecular virology. Upon completion of the postdoctoral fellowship, Troy assumed a position as associate professor of biology at Lincoln University, where she provided biomedical research opportunities for many undergraduate students and biology laboratory training for middle school students in the Philadelphia area. At Tuskegee, Troy has served the University in several capacities which include: chair of the Faculty Senate, executive secretary to the Faculty Senate, and member of the SACS Accreditation Leadership team. She has also served as mentor and research advisor to many undergraduate and graduate students. Her research area has focused on chemotherapeutic effects of natural products on breast and cervical cancer cells in African-American women as well as determining the mechanism of the telomerase enzyme. She continues her work in cancer research serving as the co-principal investigator with Dr. Timothy Turner for a cancer partnership grant with Morehouse School of Medicine and University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center. In recognition of her teaching, research and service, Troy has received several awards and honors: the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, Pennsylvania's high honor for teaching, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)-HBCU Scholar Award, and the Tuskegee University Faculty Performance Award for Service.
