Howard Students Launch Summer Canvassing Project

Student-led initiative seeks to bridge relationships between the Howard student body and the local community.

The Howard University Student Association will launch its 2014 Summer Canvassing Project on Saturday to bridge the gap between Howard University students and the local community.

This month-long, student-led initiative will be used to gauge the surrounding community's needs and listen to concerns to successfully plan effective community outreach. More than 40 students are expected to participate in the project in June.

"As students on an open campus, its important to foster a collaborative relationship between us and our surrounding community," said Leighton Watson, president of the Howard University Student Association. "We are committed to actively reaching out to the community to identify opportunities for improvement to build and restore the student/community relationship."

Target neighborhoods include Pleasant Plains, LeDroit Park, Shaw and the U Street Corridor. Canvassing will be conducted every Saturday in June from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Howard University Student Association Canvassing Project is supported by Allyson Carpenter, a newly elected commissioner of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in Washington, D.C. Ms. Carpenter, a freshman political science major at Howard, is 18 years old and the youngest elected official in the history of the District of Columbia.
Registration is still open for student volunteers. To sign up, visit herehttp://tiny.cc/1tnjgx.
