Dr. Howard Gibson Selected as AVP for Student Affairs

Dr. Howard O. Gibson, a Jackson native, has been selected as Mississippi Valley State University's Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Enrollment Management and Diversity.
As Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Enrollment Management and Diversity, Dr. Gibson will assist Dr. Jerald Jones Adley, Vice President for Student Affairs, Enrollment Management and Diversity, with overseeing the operations and affairs of the 11 units within Student Affairs.
"The Office of Student Affairs is a learner-centered division focused on providing quality programs and services which supports the mission of the University and enhances the intellectual, social and emotional development of our students," said Dr. Adley. "We are very fortunate and excited to have someone with his background and educational experience."
Prior to Mississippi Valley State University, Dr. Gibson served as the Executive Assistant to the Chancellor at Baton Rouge Community College in Baton Rouge, La. His primary role was to supervise staff and manage the day-to-day operations within the Office of the Chancellor. In addition, he served as the primary liaison to support the resolution of issues originating from the offices of the Vice Chancellors for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Administration and Finance/Audits and Workforce Development.
Other previous positions include Business Development Specialist/Instructor in the Title III Program at Hinds Community College - Utica Campus and Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dean of the School of Business at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Ark.
"Not only am I excited to have the opportunity to work at Mississippi Valley State University but also to return home to the state of Mississippi," said Dr. Gibson. "It is my aspiration to continue the passion and integrity that Dr. Adley has set forth in the division."
He has attended and presented at numerous conferences, seminars/symposiums and workshops. His research is in the field of entrepreneurship and higher education. He has been a member of the American College Personnel Association, Association for Study of Higher Education, HBCU Schools of Business Deans Roundtable and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Gibson is a 1994 graduate of W.H. Lanier High School in Jackson, Miss. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Jackson State University in May 1998. Continuing his education at Jackson State, he received a Master of Business Administration in May 2000 and the Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Higher Education in August 2008.
