Savannah State alumnus, family lead by example
More than 100 Savannah State University (SSU) students received financial support from the Fred and Mattie Jackson Foundation this spring and fall. A total of 117 students, across all years and majors, were awarded assistance. Nearly 40 percent were first-year students.
The foundation awarded scholarships ranging from as little as $100 to $8,000, depending on need and other factors. The funding allowed students to remain enrolled and continue on the track to graduation.
The foundation was started by Cyrus Jackson '77 in 2014 and named in honor of his parents, who sent their children to SSU with limited means.
"Savannah State is really dear to my family," says Jackson, one of 16 family members to graduate from the university. Jackson envisions that the scholarship and his continued involvement with Savannah State will inspire students in two areas that are paramount in his life: education and entrepreneurship.
