Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Mary McLeod Bethune, the 15th child of former slaves who rose from humble beginnings to become a world-renowned educator, advisor to five U.S. presidents, civil and human rights leader, champion for women and young people, and founder of Bethune-Cookman University (FL).

Live Online Class - Bridging the Gap: Nex Gen Historic Preservationists - Tuesday, May 10th, 1:00 ET

Description:  At Bethune-Cookman University, the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation-National Historic Landmark and Swisher Library Archives seeks to "bridge the gap" between academia and the public while preparing the next generation of historic preservationists. In order to achieve these goals, a partnership was developed with the History Department, outreach programs were implemented and a fellow was hired through an IMLS grant.  As a result of this partnership, a Public History concentration and minor will begin in the fall of 2016. This webinar will discuss the "gap" between academia and the public, describe the impact of the partnership and outreach programs, and detail the role of the university in attracting museum professionals.

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strategies and ideas to expand upon current community engagement programs
  • Identify how their museum will contribute to bringing about a more diverse constituency and staff
  • Evaluate the role of their university in preparing young museum professionals for the field.

Suggested Audience: This webinar is designed for those who educate and hire future museum professionals, current museum employees and those seeking museum related degrees/jobs.

Instructor Bios: Dr. Tasha Lucas-Youmans is the Dean of Libraries/Learning Resources Center for Bethune-Cookman University and an HBCU Library Alliance Board member.  She began her career at Bethune-Cookman in 2005.  Tasha has served as the Bibliographic Instructor/Reference Librarian, then Interim Library Director before being promoted to Library Director in July of 2006.  In April of 2013, she was appointed as Dean of Libraries and Learning Resources.  As Dean, she is responsible for the main campus library in Daytona Beach, the Hastings campus library, the Bethune-Cookman University Archives, the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation as well as textbook adoptions for the entire campus.

Anthony Dixon is the Founder and President of Archival and Historical Research Associates, LLC (AHRA), a public history company. He is also the Archivist and Assistant Professor of History at Bethune-Cookman University and Chairman of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission (the only national heritage area under the Department of Interior/National Parks Service in the United States).
