HBCU Library Alliance Membership,
It's time to conduct an election for the Board of Directors. One of the benefits of membership in the HBCU Library Alliance is eligibility to stand for election and to vote for the Board of Directors. With a new governance structure in place, the Board is excited to proceed with the nominating process. Thanks to my colleagues Jean Greene, Hinds Community College Utica Campus (MS) and Tasha Lucas-Youmans, Bethune-Cookman University (FL) for assisting me in identifying new leadership for the HBCU Library Alliance.
Call for Nominations - HBCU Library Alliance Board
The HBCU Library Alliance Board of Directors is the governing body of the HBCU Library Alliance and proposes policy for issues brought before the Board. The Board supports the goals of the Alliance and actively provides leadership. Board members serve a three-year term and may be elected to a second sequential term.

As approved in the Bylaws, the HBCU Library Alliance Board shall consist of five (5) elected and two (2) appointed voting Directors. Elected Directors will represent: one (1) public HBCU institutional member, one (1) private HBCU institutional member, one (1) 1890's HBCU institutional member; and two (2) at-large HBCU institutional members, one of which will be other than a dean/director of the library. The two appointed voting Directors shall be experts chosen and appointed by the Board of Directors and may be from an HBCU institution, from an institution that is not an HBCU, unaffiliated with an institution, a member or not a member.

Board Vice-Chair Monika Rhue, Johnson C. Smith University (NC), representing a private institution, will assume the Board Chair position.
The Board is seeking nominations to represent the following HBCU sectors:

1890's institution - One (1) position
At-large - Two (2) positions including one (1) non-director
Public institution - One (1) position

  1.  The Board meets at least three times each fiscal year, either face-to-face or by electronic format.  Board members are expected to attend these meetings.
    
  2.  Additional responsibilities of Board members are included in the attached Board Member Responsibilities document.
    

The Nominating Process
Director Nominations

Members in good financial standing (current dues-paying members) may self-nominate and suggest nominees.

To self-nominate, please forward an e-mail to me containing the following information:

  • A brief bio to include a listing of your Board and/or committee activities
  • A paragraph describing your interest in serving on the HBCU Library Alliance Board of Directors
  • Your fundraising experience.
    To suggest a nominee, please get that director's approval before submitting their name. Also share the Board Member Responsibilities document with them. Provide their contact information and your brief statement indicating their interest in serving on the HBCU Library Alliance Board of Directors.  The Nominating Committee will contact them for further discussion.
    Non-Director At-Large position
    To be eligible for the Non-Director At-Large position, the suggested nominee should have at least 3-5 years' library experience and must submit the following materials to the Nominating committee.
  • A letter of recommendation from your library director
  • A paragraph describing your interest in serving on the HBCU Library Alliance Board of Directors
  • A brief bio to include a listing of your board and/or committee activities
  • Your fundraising experience.
    Forward all nominee information to me at fayoyinm@savannahstate.edumailto:fayoyinm@savannahstate.edu no later than 5:00 p.m. EST Monday, June 26th.
    The Election Process
  1.  The Nominating committee will prepare a slate of new Board members.
    
  2.  The election will be conducted electronically beginning on Wednesday, July 5th and ending at 5:00 EST on Wednesday, July 12th.  Current dues-paying members will receive an e-ballot with instructions for voting.
    
  3.  Newly elected Board members will be announced to the membership on Monday, July 17th.
